What You can Do After One Year Of NYSC
Have you just served as a youth corps member and you are wondering what is next after the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program? Or is it just the fear of going for service and wondering if life would be the same once you put off your NYSC boots?
In this article, we would be looking at what you can do after one year of NYSC and how you can implement these points.
Get a Professional Certificate
Getting a professional certificate does not apply to all disciplines, but it will do you good as an undergraduate of Accounting, Engineering, Secretarial studies and so on to get a professional certificate in addition to your first degree.
Apply for Jobs Before POP
This is very important, as there are people who got their first jobs before their Passing Out Parade (POP). This was possible because they were able to give a shot at applying for jobs without any previous experience – other than their place of primary assignment.
Apply for Internships/Volunteer
Applying for an internship comes with many undisclosed benefits. Do you know that some people have received sponsorships to study abroad and be mentored by the best minds simply because they interned or volunteered at an organization?
Volunteering and internships are usually done by people with a thirst for growth and knowledge. And as you know, there is always a reward for being zealous.
Apply for Grants
Applying for grants after NYSC can only happen when you have successfully launched a business, whether small or big. This is why starting something small first is important. It is only serious and potential people who are awarded grants.
Get a Professional CV
It is not only a professional certificate that is needed after NYSC, you need to have a professional Curriculum Vitae (CV). Getting a CV before NYSC should be highly encouraged, however, due to many not taking this act seriously, it is still important to note that after your NYSC, you must get a professional CV.
A good CV gets you qualified for an interview which eventually lands you a job.
Networking
Networking does not have to be centered on social media only. Thankfully, Twitter now has spaces where professionals host to talk about real life issues. Networking should really be considered as a thing after NYSC as it helps boost your career path and gives you access to mentors in your chosen field.
Attend Seminars & Webinars
After NYSC you are most likely to have some time on your hands. As much as you may be qualified and intelligent, you need to step out. By attending seminars often, not only are you building your networks, your horizon is also broadened.
The year 2020 has shown everyone that things can be done fast without traveling miles across the country. If you cannot get opportunities physically, what stops you from getting it online? Attend webinars if seminars are not going to be feasible for you.
Freelancing
When freelancing is spoken about, some people tend to mistake it for just writing. Freelancing should never be about writing, even though we have many folks who are freelance writers. Freelancing could be as a graphics designer, photographer, artist, even teaching. In any of these things you eventually find an interest in, just ensure something profitable comes out of it.
Freelance gives you the opportunity to work, at the same time do other things as well. Freelance as much as you want to, but remember it must be able to pay your bills.
