How to help your autistic child with speech and communication
Autism is not a death sentence. You can help your child develop apt speech and communication skills with these strategies that will be shared below. However, you must first note that every child is different; and not all strategies will work for your child. Hence, you are advised to practice all and choose a personalized strategy for helping your child with language development.
1. Encourage social interaction. Autism in kids is not something to be ashamed of. Ensuring your child has zero social interaction because of autism will do more harm than good to his language development. If you are afraid of how your child might be negatively impacted in social interactions, you can find trusted and safe social interactions where he will not be bullied through the help of his school administrator, your neighbours or even your church leaders. Social interactions will provide your child with opportunities for him/her to practice language development.
2. Play with your child and mimic his/her sounds. You don’t want your child to deal with loneliness; so you’ve got to be your child’s best friend. Play with your child; make him/her laugh hard. When he/she tries to make a sound, mimic that sound. This will encourage your child to start mimicking you as well. When your child starts mimicking your words, you are able to start and develop the process of language development in your child.
3. Use gestures as you communicate with your child. There is a way to nonverbally communicate “come” and “go” to your child. Make sure that you do not just say the words; you should also show the words. This will help your child relate actions with words, which will help your child understand the meaning of your words and also develop speech and communication skills.
